Technical Specifications & Best Practices

  • ✓Code 128 is the most versatile format for internal inventory because it supports any ASCII character (letters, numbers, hyphens) of variable length.
  • ✓Retail formats have strict digit rules: EAN-13 requires 12 data digits (+1 Modulo-10 check digit = 13), UPC-A requires 11 (+1 check digit = 12), and EAN-8 requires 7 (+1 = 8).
  • ✓Always leave at least 3–5 mm of blank white space (quiet zone) to the left and right of the vertical bars so laser scanners can detect the start/stop patterns.
  • ✓This tool renders the graphical barcode from your number; to sell products in major supermarkets, the underlying EAN/UPC number must be licensed from GS1.
